Happy Birthday to Me!

I am posting this before midnight, the 27th, which means it's still my birthday. This was supposed to automatically post last night at midnight, but it didn't!

Here I am at 1. Going for that cake at such an early age...yum!

Here I am at age 2. I'm going for that cake again. Oh dear, there is a habit forming that will last 40-some years. Mom is upset, you can tell from her expression. Look at the death grip she has on my arms! She's restraining me from the cake, the beautiful cake!

I had a lovely day with my son today. We took an old-fashioned boat ride on the Mississippi. We decided to drive on home today because my son missed his dogs. We got home to three very happy pups and one very grumpy husband. Ahem. It was almost a perfect day.

No cake. I didn't want any. I did have some pie, pizza pie. I really hope it doesn't mess me up. I wouldn't want to fail JackSh*t's challenge! With all the driving, I'm afraid that both my legs are very swollen. Pizza had nothing to do with that. Tomorrow I'm going to drink water like I have a drinking problem. =)

Rough Day

I had a rough day today. I was okay this morning, but when I was in the shower I had a panic attack. It got worse and worse, even though I kept talking logic to myself in my head. After I got dressed, I was supposed to pick up my husband's prescription. I just got too shaky, and decided to take a Xanax. Ick. I lied down on the couch and my hubby came home from work. He gets of early.

He told me to take a nap, which I did. I woke up at 7:30. He told me he had cooked supper, the roast was on the counter waiting for me. Then he asked me if I remembered to get his prescription. Whoops. It isn't my fault he waits until he is out of meds, but he got mad and ran out of the house before the pharmacy closed.

I wasn't hungry, but knew I needed to eat. I was upset due to the stupid panic attack and not keeping a promise to hubby. I mindlessly made a roast beef sandwich on diet bread, poured a glass of milk and ate. Holy donuts, Batman. Once I realized what I had done, I kind of freaked out. Hubby showed up and we both apologized to each other, then I told him what I'd done. I was almost crying, because I weigh and measure everything.

He smiled, grabbed the roast out of the fridge, a piece of diet bread and told me to re-create the sandwich. I did. We weighed the beef, I counted the points, and he saved the day.

I had a salad a couple hours later when my appetite came back. The milk was easy to count, the glass I used holds 1 cup.

Good grief.

Tomorrow I go get my son. I have to face my stupid fear of driving through the big city again. At least this time I know where I'm going, where my exits are, and how long it will take. I still don't enjoy it, but I can do it. I am very anxious to see my son and hear his stories. I hope he made some great friends and had a blast.

We're going to take our time getting home and have a mini vacation. The bags are packed. I had to buy him two pair of shorts because he took every pair he owns to camp. I couldn't have him running around with me in dirty clothes!

I have my cereal weighed and in Gladware containers. I have my snacks weighed and in baggies. I'll make a sandwich in the morning to take with me. I'm taking a box of breakfast cookies in case we need something sweet. We can stop at Kwik Trips for fresh fruit. I'll do my best at restaurants as I have my WW Dining Out companion with me.

I'm set.

So aside from a post I have scheduled to post on Saturday, I hope everyone has a great weekend!

I'm glad things worked out the way they did. Today was my bad day, and tomorrow things should be all leveled out. Whew!

Menstruation

Oh boy, that title will make the men run!

Names I know for menstruation:

Period, on the rag, the curse, Aunt Flo, Uncle TOM, the monthlies, out of commission, the butcher, the monthly gift, crimson wave, that time of the month, monthly girlfriend, I'm broken, my friend is visiting, the scarlet letter, women troubles, women problems, not a good time, the cycle, on my cycle, red tide, and a generic man's name. For some reason growing up, we, meaning my friends and female family members, all chose a man's name for our monthlies.

I'd like to add one to that: hell on earth.

A couple of years ago, Always came out with their Have a Happy Period campaign. The first time I saw a commercial, it made my blood boil. Not long after that, a brilliant woman wrote a letter to Proctor and Gamble. If you haven't seen that letter, you can read it here.

As much as I hate the stupid Happy Period bit, I still use Always. If I were to use a Diva cup, I know that my cup would runneth over. For one fleeting moment, I thought about making my own re-usable sanitary pads. The eww factor kicked in high gear, so it really was a fleeting moment that I entertained that idea.

A lot of people are offended by the term on the rag. I'm not. When my mom was a child, that' s what they used, rags. In my 4th grade for girls only health class, we learned all about this stuff. I remember well we were studying the Indians native to Wyoming at the time. Another girl and I got the giggles, and I raised my had with a question: What did they use? The whole class burst out in laughter because everyone was thinking the same thing. The nurse, without batting an eye, answered: Dry leaves. Today, with more life experience and being more politically correct, I do wonder what people of past and ancient times used--but not enough to research it.

My aunt told me a story about my mom once. My grandmother was not very nice to mom when she was growing up. Every Christmas my mom received one Christmas gift from her parents. Somewhere in her teen years, my mom's one gift was a Kotex belt. Wow, what a sweet mother--not. I do know that my mom had to buy her own pads with her own money or else use rags. She told me that story many times. Can you imagine?

My mother gave me the talk before I had that 4th grade health class, the class where the windows were covered with butcher paper and the boys were trying to peek in. For that, I was glad. My mom gave me my own belt, showed me where the Kotex were kept, and read to me the sweet little coming of age book.

A year later, in the 5th grade, I experienced my first period. I told mom, got that belt and pad out, and mom called me in sick. I was horrified by the experience. How embarrassing. The worst part was we had a basketball game after school that day, I was the star center, and she wanted me to miss. After begging and pleading, mom let me go. I had to wear red pants. Good grief!

That game was quite the experience. Have you ever played basketball with a 2x4 in between your legs? That's exactly what that big, thick pad stuck into a belt felt like. Yuck.

I don't remember when adhesive pads came out, but they were wonderful. Growing up we always called them Kotex, because mom did, but now I call them pads. Have you ever heard the joke about the woman who had an insurance man sitting at her kitchen table and she asked her son to go get her a pad, and he came running back with a maxi-pad instead of a notepad? The whole subject is more open now than when I was a kid.

My sweet hubby has no problem whatsoever picking up pads for me at the grocery store. He even knows my preferred brand and to get super absorbency. lol

I was ten years old when the curse came to visit me. I will be 44 on Saturday. Thirty-four years of the curse. Wow, makes me feel old. From day 1 I have been plagued by cramps, heavy flow, clotting and misery. Back then Ibuprofen was not over the counter and Tylenol and Aspirin did nothing. Mom wouldn't buy Midol, perhaps it was too expensive. I don't know her reason. Thankfully Ibuprofen came on the market, and it worked fairly well with the pain most of the time.

This morning my period started. Man, am I brutally honest here on this blog. I wouldn't say that to anyone in real life. Anyway, I remembered my discussion with my new OBGYN and before I had any pain, I popped 800mg of Ibuprofen. I will do so around the clock. He told me this should prevent my uterus from spasming, which is what causes me so much pain. I used to just wait until the cramps started.

This should be the last bad period I ever experience. That just blows my mind. I think God was watching out for me, because I was expecting it to start this weekend, while I'll be away. Instead I'll be home where I can experience the heavy flow and misery due to the fibroids. By the time I leave to pick up my son, the worst will be over.

The procedure I'm having, an ablation, stops flow altogether in 50% of women. The other 50% have very light bleeding. With no flow or light flow, there is no reason for the uterus to spasm. The doc is going to "dig out" the fibroids, so there will be no more irritation and clotting.

I cannot imagine a life with no monthly pain. I cannot imagine not going through an entire package of Always Super each month. I am very excited about that part. Very hopeful. I'm still not looking forward to the surgery part at all, but I am excited.

So to Always--yes, this will be a happy period. The last one. The last miserable period, and that makes me happy.

I do know that my hormones will be the same, and I will have to figure something out about that. That anxiety I experienced Monday, missing my son so bad--it could have been because I was in tune with him, or it could have been the anxiety I get before every period. I think it was the later. I did take two Xanax this week. I do with every period. So I'm half-way there.

The relief of not experiencing the monthly pain from here on out will probably do a lot of good for my mental status. I just dread knowing I'll be out of commission for two days every month due to pain, due to the fact the Ibuprofen doesn't take it all away.

So today I'm hopeful. I will have a happy period. I can't believe the last of 34 years--wow.

Gut Feelings

I didn't end that last post very well. I didn't mean to imply I wasn't going to have the surgery. I was just whining, because that's what I do, whine. And the look on hubby's face was priceless: Panic! I could read his mind: if she doesn't have it, I'll go crazy.

We had a lovely lunch and enjoyed strolling through Walmart together. We had no plan and I just don't do well shopping unless I know what we're going to eat.

I worked out again this afternoon. I bought Richard Simmons' 60s Blast Off and Disco Sweat recently, and I'm very thankful I have the Blast Off. It's 30 minutes, but it's a nice workout.

As we were leaving Wally World, I saw a mom about my size with two younger kids. They had their groceries in the back of their van and they were scarfing down powdered sugar donuts like there was no tomorrow. She was in full binge mode, as were her kids, and she was covered in powdered sugar. She brushed it off as she noticed me looking at her.

I used to do that. I used to buy donuts or cookies and come home and scarf. I never did it in the parking lot, though. My heart ached for her. My heart ached for myself, what I used to do. I hope that never comes back to me.

Surprise!

At a little after 11, the dogs went nuts. I told them, "No, Daddy's not home." They knew otherwise. The door opened and I jumped three feet. Hubby took the afternoon off because he knew I was missing our son.

Yesterday, that was very true. I missed him something awful. I had an icky feeling in my stomach. This morning? I am completely fine. Done. So there was really no need for him to come home--wish he'd have called first.

When my mom was alive, I was very close to her. Yes, we had issues, but we were still close. The summer I went to Europe, I was overcome with a feeling in my stomach and I knew there was something very wrong with mom. The teachers I was with blew me off. I had that sick feeling for three days. I was worried sick. Then the fourth day--gone. I was fine again. Turns out, the three days that I felt awful, my mom was in the hospital with a cardiac episode. The day she was released, my stomach ache went away. I was very in tune with her.

This morning it dawned on me that I may be very in tune with my son as well. It was like a light switch, that icky feeling was gone. So I wonder if he had a rough first day, getting to know new kids, new camp, new routine. He admitted to me on the drive up that last year he was very homesick the first few days. So that might have happened to him again.

Hubby asked me out for a lunch date. He suggested Subway as that's the only place I can eat a light lunch, says he. He has a thing for their seafood sandwich. So we're going to have a late lunch at Wal-Mart. How romantic. lol We'll then do our grocery shopping. I still haven't made out a menu for the week.

It's another hot day here, and this evening we're going to take the dogs to the lake so they can swim. They love that.

My surgery is finally scheduled. They called late yesterday afternoon. It is in mid July at 8:15 in the morning. I am to be there at 7:15. I said to the lady, "You do realize we live out of town." What an idiot I am! I shouldn't have said that. What I should have said is, "I am not a morning person, that is early!" lol We'll have to leave our house at 6am. I'll have to get up at 5. Good grief.

I called her back, as we were trying to figure out what to do with the dogs. Apparently, I'll be released around noon. Wow--that just seems so fast. So the dogs will stay home.

I did get a little p*ssy about the surgery. After it was set, and I had called my doctor and made the pre-op appointment, I turned to hubby and said, "I've changed my mind. I don't want this. I'll just take mass doses of Ibuprofen." Oh my gosh, the look on his face. lol

Well, off to Subway!

Too Much Time on My Hands

Without my son here, I have too much time on my hands. Wow, am I going to have a hard time when he goes off to college!

I worked out today. Yes, I was having pain--still. I took 3 Ibuprofen (doc recommended 800 mg, but I didn't quite take that much), waited an hour, then did Richard Simmons' 60s Blast Off. It's a short tape, and since it's been so long since I worked out, thought it would be good. It was. Still had some pains, but as always, I worked around them.

I figure if I'm going to have surgery soon, it is important for me to work out. Speaking of which, I called their office Friday and she hadn't set it up. Still haven't heard a word today. Will call tomorrow morning and be assertive. I have a life, things to plan, etc., and I'm tired of waiting. (Patience has never been a virtue of mine.)

I called and made reservations for a riverboat ride. Total cost for an hour and a half excursion: $8. I do, indeed, get to ride free because the day we're there will be my 44th birthday. How cool is that!

Was looking for a KOA cabin to stay in on our way home. Darn it all, they make you stay two nights if one night is on a weekend. Sorry, but two nights at a KOA is one too many. Will find a motel instead. I thought it would be quirky and fun to stay in one of those cabins. Oh well.

My house is too quiet. The dogs are sleeping, and I'm about ready to start talking to myself.

I'm going to clean out the fridge, do some unusual laundry such as curtains, table skirts, etc. I'll get some spring cleaning in. Tonight my hubby will help me move around the scanner, external hard drive, etc. so that I can finish scanning the family photos. This is the project that will never end, it has been emotionally difficult, but I need to get them done so I can move on with life. Two albums left, and then my dad's "war" and pre-marriage album. I need to burn disks for all siblings, mail 'em out, have them decide which original photos they want, mail those out, and be DONE.

I have not made a weekly menu. I figured cleaning out the fridge and freezer would give me some quick and easy meals. Will probably go grocery shopping tonight when it's cool. It's in the 90s today. We had one day in the 90s in May, but other than that, it's been a very cool summer. The heat is a jolt to the system.

Did I mention how quiet it is here?

Random Monday Thoughts

I do miss my son. All morning I've been wondering what he's doing, hoping he's having fun and making friends.

This morning I have also been thinking of a blog post I read last night. Sean told one of the most powerful stories I have ever read on the act of forgiveness. I was in awe when I read it, and I still am. If you haven't read it, pop on over. His act of forgiveness turned out to be such a gift for him, for his father, and others. It really moved me. I will probably carry his story with me forever. Forgiveness is such a difficult thing and he showed how to do it well. Good character impresses me more than anything, and Sean really shines. Sean is also Ang's blogger of the week.

My dogs are really out of sorts today. They have not eaten their breakfast, are snippy with each other, and are clingy with me. They normally enjoy a good hour outside in the fresh air, but today they just want to be reassured. They miss their boy.

I am toying with the idea of a little mini-vacation. When I pick my son up, I don't want to come home on I-35 because that drove me crazy, the stop and go traffic, for 1 hour 35 minutes. Yuck. There's no way that will be cleared up by the time I pick him up. So I've been looking at Google maps, and I'm thinking of coming home through Wisconsin. I would love to stop somewhere for a boat ride on the Mississippi.

I'm toying with it. Food is an issue, as there will be small towns and no major restaurants where I can easily figure points--that's true of the places I want to stop. You have to live, though, and figure that stuff out. Changing one's lifestyle puts a damper on getting in the car and going. You have to plan ahead. Easy to do when you have chain restaurants and can figure points.

Will think on that.

Monday Morning Weigh-In

251Check Spelling

-2 pounds for the week!

Finally, after a month of small losses, I hit another 5-pound goal. I give myself that red star for each 5 pounds--just like Weight Watchers does in the meetings. =)

11% of my original weight gone.

I Miss My Son

I left him seven ours 28 minutes ago and I miss him. Nah, just kidding. No, really, I think I do miss him already.

It was a loooong journey.

Within the first five miles on the road, I called my hubby and told him I'd be home to swap and take his Suburban. When I took my car up to 70, it started rattling and making a noise in the engine. Scary!

Swapped cars, and two miles out I remembered that my book on CD was in my car not his so I'd be bored on the way home. Oh well.

Rained all the way there.

Traffic was thick. What is it about big cities and so darned many people on the road? Especially on a Sunday!

I am here to say that Twin City drivers are nicer than Denver drivers. Sorry, Denver, I love you, learned to drive there, visited, miss you, miss the Casa Bonita, but the Twin City folks are not speed demons and are much more courteous!

We made it to our destination by noon. Stopped outside of the camp at a Kwik Trip to eat lunch. We used their restrooms and then bought something. I have this thing, I have to buy something if we use a restroom, otherwise I think it's tacky. So what does a Weight Watcher do at a convenience store? What little snack could she possibly find? Why, a banana, of course. Kwik Trips sell some fruits and veggies, so we used their potty and paid 50 cents for two bananas.

Camp was cool, counselors were nice, mom didn't cry until she got in the car to leave. Son was the first in his cabin and had the pick of beds. He got an upper bunk next to a window. He was happy about that!

Drove home, through all that darned traffic once again and not far out of the Twin Cities, traffic came to a standstill. For 1 hours 35 minutes we were stop and go on I-35 South. I wished I had my book on CD so bad. That was mentally and physically draining! The kicker was that there was NO construction going on, just a bottleneck for miles and miles because of the construction lanes. I think we went 15 miles during that time. I never use the cell phone while driving, but at 5 miles an hour tops, what's going to happen?

So from this trip I learned:

I get dehydrated quickly. I didn't drink a lot because I knew I'd be in the car for six hours. Didn't want to stop to go all the time. Didn't want to pee my pants. By the time I got home my mouth was dry and I felt icky.

I can do a road trip without chocolate.

I can do a road trip without chips.

I can buy a snack at a convenience store that is smart: Bananas!

I was able to face my fears and drive that awful drive. (It wasn't that bad but I did not enjoy it.)

I miss my baby--er, teenager. He's a baby teenager, he's 13.

We're going to find another route to come home, because there's no way I will sit for an hour and a half again in a car.
