Weigh-in Day

I used to do weigh-in days on Mondays.  Why is Monday so important?  I got my groove back last Thursday, so I decided from here on out, Thursdays would be my new weigh-in day.

And here it is:

I lost nine pounds this week.  Yup, that's a 9.

I know, much is water, but not all. I can feel the reduction in the belly.  I also know that I'll be back to much lower from here on out, but...

DAYUM, nine pounds!!!!!!!

Happy girl this morning!

And now........to the gym!!!

Monday Morning Weigh In

5 pound loss this week. Holy buckets of fat, Batman!

I think stress did me in this past week. It was very scary, something personal happened and then I got a bad reading on a mammogram. Turns out everything was a-okay with the mammogram, Thank you, God, and the other problem is slowly working itself out.

For the first time in my life, I did not crave food when I was stressed. The opposite happened, I did not want to eat. I never understood that before. Food made me nauseous. Strange--when did that happen! By Friday I was eating normally again, though. It's very strange to force oneself to eat, though.

I'll take the loss either way. I'm now 2 pounds away from my weight before my kidney stone surgery, which rocks. Moving in the right direction, back on track, emotionally improving--with room to grow.

Making big mistakes that bite me in the a$$ BUT learning instead of beating myself up, that mistakes make us learn and grow. So no guilt, just lessons learned. Growing. Moving forward.

Monday Morning Weigh In

Haven't done one of these in a long time. Drum roll....

3 pounds gone! WOO HOO

This gives me an 11-pound loss for the month of August.

I'm back, baby, I'm back.

There's nothing I can't do.

Good News/Stupid News

Good news: down 1.5 pounds, total loss to date: 90.5 pounds. Better news: At doctor's office, I weighed 190 in jeans and shoes. She said their scale was extremely accurate. Wow. I was 192 in my birthday suit at home this morning. I'm still using my scale at home as my basis, though, because I don't go to the doctor once a week to weigh in -- consistency counts.

Stupid news: No blood in urine today so we do NOTHING. I kind of see why they want to do nothing, but I'm tired of pussyfooting around and want to get aggressive, dagnabit. So if it happens again, then we do something. Until then, suffer. Was told to make another appointment with my gyno, which I did, but that's not covering all the bases.

I don't drink, but if I did, I would have one now.

Intensity

Over the years, when I worked out, it was always with one particular instructor. I knew his routines by heart--well enough to break out and do them in the aisles when I heard the songs playing at stores. (I never did this, but I could have.)

A year ago, I knew I had outgrown these workouts. I knew I had to incorporate weight work and flexibility training. I didn't know where to turn, though, as I am a girlie girl and the thought of doing men's weight work made me ill.

I sat down at Collage Video and started previewing clips. Then I found my magic bullet: The FIRM. For me, the magic was with the older FIRMS, the originals, put out by Anna Benson, her husband Mark Henrickson and her sister Cynthia Benson. I ordered Fat Blaster, Volume 4, and Maximum Body Shaping from Collage and fell in love. This was in September.

One year ago this week, my son and I took a mini-vacation to celebrate his birthday. We were in a city, and we hit many thrift stores so I could find more FIRM videos. I came home empty handed. Why? Because The FIRM works and is still in high demand. So, upon arrival home, I sat down and ordered almost all of them from Amazon's Marketplace.

And the rest is history.

I started building muscle, I started working out at a higher intensity. I sweat bullets. I was in LOVE. Beautiful, graceful instructors in a beautiful setting--it's nicknamed The Mansion--was right up my alley.

As time wore on, I progressed and branched out. I found and fell in love with Christi Taylor, Cathe--who I consider the holy grail. She's tough! I bought P90X and have done a few weeks of it, but I don't care for long rotations so it's back on the shelf for now.

All this time I was building muscle, and I have the Bod Pod results to prove that! I was losing fat slowly. I call myself The Tortoise--which is a play on words, because one of my favorite workouts is The Tortoise by The FIRM. Slow, slow, slow-yet I've watched carefully what I ate, and worked out pretty faithfully--even when I was having all that bad pain.

Then comes the purchase of The FitBit. That arrived in mid August. I played, tinkered and charted things. I got determined to get more steps in. Slowly, in my tortoise fashion, I increased my daily step count. Right this very minute, my weekly average for daily steps is 24,000. That's a lot--for me, and for everyone as I am in the top 3 rankings in all the FitBit groups I'm in.

It was tough to get that many steps in especially when I couldn't get out to walk a lot. So I added in George Foreman's Walking DVDs. I do one every morning. I get 3-4,000 steps per workout. I then added Stephanie Huckabee's PowerFit cardios. 20 minutes each, I gain around 2000 steps with each of those. I also discovered more of Petra Kolber's DVDs: I'm especially fond of Cardio for Beginners. Plus, I walk for real outside. I am less efficient around the house prompting more steps. Going to Walmart? Great, I walk the store a few times for a couple thousand steps. No one has a clue what I'm doing as I am pushing a cart.

I've charted, I've graphed, I've deciphered and figured. This past week I came up with a formula for myself. My goal is to have a 1000 to 1250 deficit daily between what FitBit tells me my calorie burn is and what I consume.

It's working. (For now, at least!) This week's weigh-in, I lost 3.5 pounds! I had entire months where I didn't lose that much! I am thrilled. I also hit the mini-goal I had of losing 30% of my original weight.

Now, knowing me and my track record, who knows if this will continue. However, I figured out that the additional steps per day count AND that I don't need to do everything at high intensity. I try to do a step tape or power walk every day or six times a week. Both are high intensity for me. I average between 6-7,000 steps per step tape. I also do weights three times a week. I stretch a lot, mostly using Classical Stretch. It's that light aerobics, the moving in the low-end of the aerobic target zone, that is helping. I think.

The best part is I'm not starving. I get to eat between 16-1800 calories per day. That's a lot! Well worth it.

I love my FitBit. I love it more than chocolate. I love how my health is improving. I imagine myself kicking that HDL into high numbers with all my hard work. I love this week's weigh-in.

Monday Morning Weigh-In

200
that's a 2.5 pound loss since I last updated my sidebar. I've been floating between the last entry on the sidebar, 202.5, and 206 forever, it seems. Hopefully this new movement (two days in a row at 200) is the start of a new trend, a plateau buster, and I will be on my way with the scale again.

Monday Morning Weigh-In

Yes, I know it's Tuesday. I'm a day late and a dollar behind.

Weight: 202.5
Loss: 1.5

Yay!

Monday Morning Weigh-In

Yes, I know it's Tuesday, not Monday. It feels like Monday after a 3-day weekend, though.

Today's weight: 204

I shot up a gazillion pounds the day after surgery and I've been busting my tail to get back to 204. Finally, I've made it.

My tummy is finally back to its normal size. This just happened within the past couple days. I have a bunch of new stretch marks on my tummy--I'm not very happy about that! Yet, it is what it is.

Exercise goals have changed: I'm going to work on The Firm's 90-Day Rotation. It starts out for the first two-thirds at an intermediate level, then bops back up to advanced the final month. I think that's what my body needs at the moment: Not pushing myself so hard, just a gentle but fun and effective way to get back in the groove. Plus, my Firms just bring me great joy.

Feeling pretty good overall. I am having some pain in the area that was causing me trouble. It has not been to the degree it was prior to surgery, yet it's still there. Another "it is what it is." I've decided the best thing to do is accept that I may have chronic pain from here on out. I'm hopeful we can get it figured out or that it will stop, but if it doesn't, I will just accept it. I hope to quit bitching about it so much.

And that's that. 204. Yes. My eye's still on the prize.

Marching forward.

6.21.2010

Monday Morning Weigh-In

208.5

Wow, gain of 4.5 pounds. Shocking. The highest I got post surgery was 211. I've been floating between 208 and 209 the past three days.

My belly is still bloated from the surgery. It's still extremely tender. Funny, as time marches on, it's more sore. My over-all body bloat has diminished, though.

My waist is 2 1/2 inches bigger than pre-surgery. I don't measure often, but I did take a quick one before the surgery and I'm glad I did because it just makes me feel a bit better knowing I'm still in recovery from the surgery.

So, that's that. While I tend to freak out about the number on the scale, this doesn't even phase me because my body is in transition right now. I'm debating putting this on my side bar because I don't think it's a true indication of anything. Not that I'm ashamed of it because I'm not, but I don't think it's accurate. Every other week is a true representation--today it really isn't.

6.14.2010

It's Monday

Weight: 204
same as last week

Today is my surgery. Would appreciate prayers and good vibes.

Surgery is at 1 central time. I'm really going to be hungry and thirsty by then. I'm already aching for coffee!

That's it. Have a great day, everyone.

A Sad Anniversary

My Dad died two years ago today. I don't cry or get upset, as he was 81 and it was his time. I do miss him, though. Watching HBO's The Pacific has had me wondering what his WWII experience was, as he was a Marine in the South Pacific.

~~~
I hate that this blog has become so negative. I cringe and I'm not posting like I used to. I'll just share that the past week has been very hellish as the pain has been very high. Tried to work out on Saturday, and made it 30 minutes through a step routine and had to stop as I was hurting too much. Today I was feeling desperate for a strength workout, so I put in a Cathe STS disk. Surprisingly, I was able to do most of it even though I was in pain. Interestingly, the overhead presses hurt my pain area really bad so I just didn't do them. Also had to modify the push ups that I already modify. lol I felt pleased and much better knowing I did my weights, though.
Pain is still really bad tonight, and I hope to do a cardio tomorrow--time will tell.
It's growing old, fast. I broke down yesterday and sobbed. Actually I wept off and on all day and then finally broke into sobs. Pain, stress and worry, not being able to move like I want to, it just all hit yesterday. Much better today, no tears--even on dad's anniversary.
I have such hope that this pain can be taken care of--and I keep thinking how lucky I am to have the hope and the probability that it will be eliminated. My heart aches for those who suffer chronic pain, especially with no hope of getting relief. Counting my lucky stars on that.
Weighed in the same, which just makes me so mad. I can't help but wonder if the stress, the "whatever is wrong" is just messing up my losses. Of course not being able to exercise doesn't help, either.
Tomorrow I'll try a cardio. Tomorrow I'll also exercise patience. Four weeks from today until surgery. Seems so far away, especially after a week like the past week. Saying prayers, crossing my fingers, and filled with hope.
Can't wait until I can be more positive here--but this just consumes me and I'm not a perky change-the-subject type person. I wear it all on my sleeve.
~~~
Miss you, Dad.

Monday Morning Weigh-In

Well, I stayed the same. No gain, no loss.
~~~
I had a hot flash last night. I got out of bed, stuck my head in the freezer, and then applied an ice pack to my forehead. It felt so much better. I also pulled the only book on menopause I own off the bookshelf: The Wisdom of Menopause by Christiane Northrup. I read for a bit, then I did some reading online.
What I've learned and none of my doctors have ever mentioned is that during periomenopause, anxiety and panic attacks are common. They have given me the evil eye when I've mentioned the majority of my panic attacks occur right before or during a period. I'm not looking to them for validation anymore. I know my body.
I have also developed a reaction, of sorts, to caffeine. Some of my worst panic attacks occurred after consuming caffeine. While DH was in Germany, we had a Subway. I got a large Diet Pepsi. Almost immediately after drinking it, my heart rate shot up,I felt a panic attack coming on, I felt like sideways and going to fall over. I actually put my heart rate monitor on during that and my heart rate was high 80s to low 90s for a few hours. That was when I completely gave up caffeine.
Or so I thought. I switched from half-caf coffee to decaf. Little did I know that decaf does have caffeine. I use Folgers and for a shot of dark and heavy, I use a scoop of Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts decaf. One scoop. Well, those two brand are high in caffeine for decaf coffee. I will be switching to Folgers Instant Decaf (cough, cough, sputter) until I can get off coffee altogether. I really enjoy coffee, which sucks. Never liked any tea I have ever tried. The instant decaf is 99.7% caffeine free--which means it still has some caffeine, but much less than I'm used to.
Yesterday morning there was a pot of half caf. Instead of DH pouring his coffee in a thermos as he's kind enough to do for me, I poured myself a cup. I had a reaction. I felt as if I was going to fall out of the shower. Dizzy, light-headed, nasty headache, and what I always though of as a full-blown panic attack. I took a Xanax and laid down and slept. That feeling was with me all day. Ate, drank tons and tons to flush my system, but it didn't go away.
So what I've learned is caffeine is bad, bad, bad for me. No more Starbucks, which makes me want to cry. Yet, I'd much prefer to never have a reaction like that. I'll just have to find something else to drink that is caffeine free and warm. Warm water, anyone? lol
And so it goes.
And on a final note, I have one more revelation this weekend. After reading a bit about menopause, periomenopause, etc., I can't help but wonder if my slow weight loss is a direct result of my ever-changing hormones. I've always known to my core that my hormones were completely out of whack--now I'm wondering if that hasn't affected the weight loss. Really, I hardly ever cheat, I weigh everything that goes in my mouth, I work out when my body says it's okay--scientifically I should be losing at a better rate. This past week I dropped caloric intake on the days I did not work out. Still a zero. No cheating. So it's really something for me to consider. Again, I won't be asking my doctors that question as I know they'll roll their eyes and give me the evil eye again. I don't need their validation on that, though.
It kind of changed my perspective. I have faced adversity on this journey. While I don't mind moaning and whining about it, I don't like admitting the very fact that this has been a struggle health wise. And the most amazing thing of all is I have not let it stop me. I keep going. I am pretty FFT. And if you don't know what FFT is, think back to the move Terms of Endearment, it was a phrase Shirley MacClaine used when she was describing her new relationship.
I absolutely *have* to go shopping sometime today. I have no clothes. My tops are too big and I have one pair of jeans. My sweats are too large, and the only other thing I have to wear are exercise capris--which I have the proper size, but those I can't really wear in public.
Imperative that I get some shorts/capris to wear.
The weird thing is buying size 16s. They can be found in both the plus size and regular department. I still have that mindset that if I go searching in the regular sizes, people might look at me and wonder why I'm in there. When will that mindset leave me? Just like being stuck on the size 18 capris I donated--they're too large, I couldn't wear them even if I hadn't donated them. My mind needs to grasp my body's size.
And for what it's worth, I don't really care what people think...so perhaps it's not being afraid of people wondering why I'm in the regular size department, perhaps it's just me not feeling....worthy? lol I don't know. I do know I need to get over it and fast because I am at the stage where getting dressed in the morning is not an option because I have nothing to put on.
You know, this is actually a good feeling, knowing I've shrunk so much I have no clothes. While I don't want to spend a lot of money at the stage of the game on clothing, I sure am in desperate need of some jeans/capris/shorts. I'll check our two thrift stores first, then I'll hit the mart stores.
Crazy Weigh-in Day
Monday afternoon and I'm just now logging into blogger.
Weight: 208.5
Loss: 2
Total Loss: 74
Today was a monumental day. I dropped from Class II Obesity to Class I obesity. Next stop is being overweight. I can't wait to be overweight. lol
~~~
Hubby came home from work this morning with an ear ache, balance issues and his ear was bleeding a bit. Scary. So I called my doctor, got him in right away, and he's on ear drops. He took a long nap and now he's doing work. (When I was sick, I took the day off work--not him!)

By the time we finished at the doctor, filled his prescription and ran by his work to get his stuff, it was late morning. Came home, ate and finally started school.

~~~
When DH came home and told me of his ear issues, I went into panic mode. I believe it is a learned reaction to bad things I have experienced with loved ones over the years. I've been jumpy all day. Several times I thought of taking a Xanax--and I would have but for the fact I have to teach my son, and frankly, Xanx makes me mellow and puts me to sleep. I'm hoping the yoga (gag, gag, sputter) from P90X today will help.
~~~
P90X is going well. I missed one day because my ovary decided to cause me some more pain. That was a cardio day and so I just skipped the day altogether and did my weights the next day. The Shoulders and Arms tape from P90X--I absolutely ***loved*** it! I was able to do tricep dips for the first time ever in my life! That is not because of P90X, my strength just finally decided to kick in. I was really excited over that. Today? I'm having doms in my triceps. Ah, lovely DOMS.

That's about it. Getting ready to do the yoga soon. Did I ever mention I do NOT like yoga? And P90X's yoga tape is 90 minutes long? AAAAAAAACCCKKKK!!! Yuck. I'll do it. I may not have a smile on my face, though. lol

3.01.2010

Monday Morning Weigh-In

Weight: 210.5
Loss: 2 pounds

I've now lost a tad over 25% of my original body weight!

I've had a pretty good streak lately! I can't help but wonder if it's because I've added more fat and protein to my diet. Whatever it is, I'll take it!

About the P90X, when I get it I'll watch each DVD before I start. There are 12 so it will take a bit to do that. I will occasionally comment about it here, but I do have my exercise blog where I post about my daily exercise and I'll comment on each workout there. Firming Up is the name of that blog. I started that blog to keep track of my workouts. I made it separate so that I could easily look at what I've done and keep things more organized.

I guess I'm getting to the point where I like a challenge. My husband mentioned P90X in passing yesterday and at first I thought there was no way I could do that. Yet when I actually researched it, got a better understanding of what it is, I changed my mind. It will be very difficult for me--I can do one pull up on a good day! So I can see lots of good strength gains in my future training! I think I'll also have an opportunity to use his Ironmaster weights. lol Aside from my barbell, I don't use anything higher than 12 pounds now. I've gone to 30 on the barbell.

So yes, I'm a bit excited. I do despise rotations and can never follow them--so that will be a challenge. I know I'll desperately miss my Firms and Cathe. However, I know that I can substitute on the cardio days and fill my longing for Firm/Cathe that way.
