As my son sits across from me doing his school work, I've got the laptop up and I'm dreaming.
One thing I desperately want is a built-in dishwasher. I have a portable and we are always using it and it's always in front of the kitchen sink. You can't run the sink when it's running, and it is one of the reasons I get behind on dishes.
Sadly, our kitchen area is U-shaped and a dishwasher won't fit on either side of the sink. In fact, a smaller 18-inch dishwasher wouldn't fit on either side of the sink.
When Dad died and I got a small inheritance, I spent most of the money getting us debt free--and we have remained debt free for six months now. I don't have much left. It's nice to have a nest egg, especially in these hard times.
I'm dreaming, though. My hubby is afraid to do the carpentry work involved to put in a dishwasher. I am curious as to what it would cost, aside from the cost for a new dishwasher.
Now that we're eating healthier, it means we're cooking much more. More pile up of dishes. The dishwasher is always there and we have no room to move. One of the bad things about having a small house. The dishwasher has no home now, also, because when we got the new puppy, his crate went where we used to store the dishwasher--not that it was there very often, though.
A penny saved is a penny earned. It's good to have money in the bank, even though it's not much. I wonder, though, if I should make some calls and get some estimates. It would be one of the best things I could do for kitchen flow.
Several months ago, I emptied out the cupboard where a built-in would go when my hubby was thinking about doing it himself. So we've lived without that space since before Christmas.
Should I do it? In this economy where nothing is certain? I wonder what it would cost.
One of the things I lost along the way over the years was my ability to dream. I'm now dreaming about a built-in dishwasher. I'm dreaming about a few other things, but I could make this a reality.
Am I worth it?
ha ha ha--I know the answer to that is yes.
I think I'll make some calls. Mom and Dad would want me to have a built-in dishwasher. Well, if it doesn't cost that much.
do it!! do it!!!
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely do it Jo! You can get a dishwasher pretty cheap at the scratch and dent stores, or craigslist, find someone remodeling their kitchen if you want to be a bit more frugal. And with the economy the way it is, you can negotiate for the appliance and the work to have it done. I would even say decide how much you are willing to spend, and then find it for that price. Make it another challenge!
ReplyDeleteI have the dishwasher, a portable that can be built in. It's only a couple years old.
ReplyDeleteI'm just worried about the cost to cut my cupboard up -- the carpentry. My cupboards were custom built and there will be cutting and some re-building involved. Then we'll have to get a plumber to run a hot water line and an electrician to give it juice.
I didn't call anyone, but asked DH if he knew anyone good. He didn't. I'll call the appliance store where we got the dishwasher and ask them.
We have a dishwasher but never use it... :D
ReplyDeletegood luck with deciding!
