When I was out and about today, I stopped at Walgreens. I bought myself a glucose testing meter. No, I don't have diabetes. (I hope!) I want to check it every now and again, though, because I am borderline. I don't want to have to wait to go in to the doctor's office.
I found what I wanted, a OneTouch Ultra Mini. It was $20. I don't need to spend a lot of money on a meter. I then found a lancing device, Walgreens' brand, for 9.99. Lancets were 5.24 for 100. Both my parents would re-use their lancets--they would wipe them with alcohol when they were done using them. I'll probably change it each time, because unless it's high, I don't plan on testing every day. Finally, a box of 25 strips for 29.99. $63.21 total. Ouch. I think it will be worth it, though.
I almost bought a blood pressure monitor, but I didn't have the money for that. Will have to wait until next payday. I set out to do this once before and never made it to the store. When one has the money, they should use it! lol
I haven't tested, I'm just going to wait until tomorrow morning. I am really hoping that it has dropped. After losing 27.5 pounds, exercising for a month, and eating healthier, it should be better. Crossing my fingers.

Today I have had a LOT of hip pain. So I have not done cardio at all, and won't. I'm going to do my Richard Simmons Tonin' Uptown tape in a bit and avoid anything that will disturb my hip. Doing my grocery shopping today at Wal-mart was bothersome, I could feel it with every step. Not good. I took some Motrin to help with the inflammation. If it's still sore tomorrow, I'll do toning again. While I'm very serious about my exercise, toning is exercise as well. I'm not going to mess up my hip.
I'm not happy, but that is one of those things that happens when you let yourself get up to 282.5--you put great strain on your joints.
I sat in a chair at a computer for hours yesterday. I was working on some projects and surfing a little. Then in the evening, I called my friend and we talked 3 hours. All sitting in the same chair. I know sitting for long periods of time like that is terrible for hip pain, and I'm sure that's what did it. So today I've been up and active, but nothing grueling. And I plan not to sit here much longer.
When did we go from the hip crowd to the hip replacement crowd?
ReplyDeleteHope you feel better soon. For what it's worth, I think you wasted your $$$ on the kit; keep up the way you've been going and you'll continue sprinting away from diabetes (and probably hip pain as well).
lol Jack...you always make me laugh.
ReplyDeleteI'm still morbidly obese, and will be in the obese category for quite some time. Both my parents and two of three siblings have diabetes. When I was young and thin, I was hypoglycemic, which is a precurser to diabets.
I still eat too many carbs/starches.
So, I'm hoping it is a waste of money. But I will feel a bit better checking myself every once in awhile because if anyone is a candidate to become diabetic, it is me.
That is funny. Two years ago after being told by a doctor that I was borderline diabetic (not because of actual testing, but speculation over my weight). I got a testing kit like you- and tested for about a month. I realized he was full of shit, and just couldn't put anything together for my symptoms besides an obesity related disease. I am glad I did it though because I was able to put my worry to rest by recording my blood sugar for an extended period of time, and seeing that it was fine.
ReplyDeleteI completely understand the need to know for yourself.
Hope the hip feels better real soon.
ReplyDeleteI am diabetic and actually take insulin twice a day. Testing is no fun but because of the -33 lbs I have been able to cut my dose in 1/2!! I think it is good that you are keeping an eye on it. I think knowledge is power! When you are done using it you could always donate it to someone who needs it right? :-)
ReplyDeletePersonally I'm just like you... get the testing kit and use it at home, BUT at the same token... i'd be finding me a specialist to find out the REAL deal for me... and have it monitored that way also. When it comes to something that can cause death... DEATH!! I am all for the western medicine to diagnose me AND then I'll use Eastern meds to treat :) :):):):) LOL
ReplyDeleteWhatever works for you! that's always what's best. Good luck!
Katie, that is such wonderful news...not long and you'll be off insulin altogether--and the other things you want off!
ReplyDeleteJules, I have a physical coming up. My regular doctor can test for it. The thing is, I usually get told to come back in a year. I'm trying to be pro-active. I kind of also want to see how my meal choices influence my numbers. Not that you can always tell, because my parents' experience varied so widely, but hopefully I'll be able to tell.
Oh, and I will give it to my sister when I'm done with it. =)
ReplyDeleteIt's not a bad idea to have your own monitor to check your blood. I hope you have the same experience as Losing Waist. Hope the hips heals soon.
ReplyDeleteWhen will school be over for you all? or do you homeschool year round?
ReplyDeleteI hope your hip gets better soon! I was also achy from sitting in one position for most of the day yesterday...
ReplyDeleteI know you want to exercise everyday, but if the pain is such that you're taking medication, maybe a day off is called for? Recovering time is just as critical as exercising.
