A health, fitness, and weight-loss story.

A Little Update

This weekend I bought myself some new DVDs. Ahem. As if I don't have enough. There's a term: vidiot. It's applied to those who love exercise videos and have a compulsion to buy them. (And use them!!!) I have turned into a vidiot.

I spent the weekend researching diet, nutrition, triglycerides, HDL, etc. I have also tried to *up* my fat intake--with healthy fats. This is proving extremely difficult for me. I was averaging 18-20% fat a day, with my lowest day coming in at 12%--eeek.

I'm also trying to up my protein. This is also difficult for me!

I am not going low carb, but I'm just trying to get things in better proportion.

The past year I think the focus was to count calories, "diet"--term used loosely, and exercise. I've got all that down really well. Love the exercise, hardly ever go over on my calories, and I am very aware of what I eat.

This coming year my focus is going to be on a healthier food intake. I want those triglycerides down and the HDL up. I want my insides to look fabulous. With that, the outside will look much better.

Thank you for all the recommendations for peanut butter/almond butter. I've made note and when I get to the store, I'll purchase. (DH, bless his heart, did our grocery shopping this weekend.)

Many times I have whined about my slow losses. Granted, I did lose 2 sizes without losing much on the scale, but still...I can't help but wonder if my too-low fat intake has something to do with that. That, and too low protein. I do try to eat a protein snack after workout out. I do try to eat protein with every meal, but I'm just not getting enough. I also wonder if this has affected the recent occurrence wherein a lot of my hair comes out when I comb it. Not a lot, but enough to pull it out of the comb to throw away. I haven't experienced that before. That could be with age, as our hair does thin--but I wonder.

I still have a lot of researching and implementing to do.

Always researching, thinking, figuring things out. It's a never ending thing--and that's okay, because health is worth it.

  2. You are only a vidiot if you don't use them, Jo!
But since it's clearly "your thing," you win!
    Good on the work outs.
I "do" low carb - but I don't think of it like that....
I just stay away from the obvious things that are so sweet they raise your blood sugar (bs) and make you hungry.
For me that's like Orange Juice, Bread, Candy, Cakes, Corn, Wheat...
Things I could live without - at least for now...

  4. I've been trying to focus on getting more healthy fats in too. I love what you said about wanting your insides to look good too- that's so important. Probably more important than what our outsides look like!

  6. My HDL was a bit low last year and the nurse I talked to said it can be improved with exercise. I laughed at her and told her for the first time in my life I had been exercising regularly. I had wondered if it was due to a low fat intake as I was in weightloss mode at the time. I spoke to my doctor yesterday at my annual physical (not knowing what the numbers were yet) and asked him how to raise HDL numbers besides exercise and he said Omega3 fish oil supplements.

  7. You are on the path I'm hoping to follow. I'm still doing awesome on calorie counting, but I am still eating too many processed foods because they are calories I can count and the portion is controlled. I need to transition to more healthy choices as well.

    Learning is fun!
