Don't Worry, Be Happy =)

I have received the Happy 101 Award from a few blogging friends, latest was Kait. I've been really remiss in thanking everyone so I'd like to do so now. THANK YOU everyone!

This blog has been so negative lately (which is a part of life, but still!) and so I will gladly do the list of 10 things that make me happy. Nothing like focusing on the good!

So here's my list of 10, in no particular order except for #1 and 2.

1. My son. No person has ever made me happier in my life. Not even my DH, but he comes a very close second. It's different. Anyway, my son has the sweetest, most loving spirit. He's extremely intelligent, fights for causes he believes in, and is extremely compassionate. He just makes me melt.

2. My husband. We drive each other crazy, we annoy each other, and he hogs the TV. But when he comes home at night or from a trip, all is right with the world again.

3. The blogging community. This ranks really high on my list because the support I have received has been paramount to my success. I love all the blogging friends I have, even though I get really behind on reading blogs. You guys just brighten my day.

4. Vintage stuff. Girly, vintage items just make me smile. I love to hold an old object, especially kitchen object, and wonder who it belonged to, how she used it, and what her life was like. I like vintage stuff because it reminds me of my mom, whom I miss terribly. It reminds me of both my grandmas, and my childhood. It makes me feel warm and cozy.

5. My doggies. Three border collies bring a smile to my face every time. I get kissed, French kissed on accident, jumped up and hugged every single day.

6. My kitties. One will snuggle and follow me through the house. The other likes to snuggle in bed at night. They keep me warm and their purring lulls me to sleep.

7. Exercise. The Firm, Tracie Long, Cathe, Jari Love, Tracey Staehle...they rock! Nothing makes me happier than getting a good workout in. My DVDs and VHSs are my favorite things. Those, and our photos, are what I would grab after the people and animals, of course, if we had a disaster.

8. Thrift stores. That's where I can acquire vintage stuff plus old exercise videos. Plus it's just fun to look and people watch while at thrift stores.

9. My bedroom. It's dated--dark purple walls with white sponged on top. Pretty white lace curtains. I painted all our furniture white. The room has a south-facing window, and it just glows during the day. It is my favorite room in the house and it is just a cozy retreat.

10. Me. I make myself happy. I am changing my life, losing weight, getting fit and growing muscle. I am working through my problems, having a little more fun. I am pretty fantastic. I don't mean that in a conceited way at all--it comes from confidence I'm gaining and self-esteem.

Up, Down, All Around

That's me right now. Sometimes great, sometimes not. That is life, though.

"It" is still with me. I toughed it out this morning and did a Cathe step workout--one of the easy ones. She has some really tough step tapes! I may or may not do one of her weight tapes tonight.

Bought Smucker's Natural Peanut Butter. It is DELICIOUS! PB has always been just okay for me, but this? Yum, this is the kind of peanut butter I can crave. Plus, I told my son that it was like going back 40 years in time to when I was really little--this is how I remember peanut butter!

Next week is super busy, which I'm dreading. I cancelled our trip last week to the city because the lights in the car were coming on--now I forget which light it was. That's DH's car. My car? We were driving down the road and the anti-lock breaks went out. They have ordered the part and it will be fixed Wednesday to the tune of $600. Yikes. It's always something!

My doctor appointment is at the end of the week. I'm nervous and excited--looking for relief. In this short period of time, I have gained an entirely new respect for those who suffer with chronic pain. It's not just the pain, but the emotional upheaval that goes along with it.

This has really kept my focus on HEALTH. That's always been my focus, but it has just really nailed it in how important this journey is!

Right now I'm feeling pretty content. Only mild cramps, which I can easily deal with. I got a workout in today, I got a nap in today, and I got a lot of rest--a relaxing day, which I needed. Of course I got very little done on my to-do list, but as they say, Tomorrow is another day!

Tired

This week has been frustrating. The yesterday and today I had really bad pain--on the couch, crying out pain. Frustrated the doc didn't give me something for pain relief.

Got up and Googled myofascial release/trigger points late this afternoon. Found that there are trigger points for my troubled areas. So I followed instructions (from the LOOK feature at Amazon in a book) and massaged the trigger points in my lower abs.

Knock on wood, I feel a bit better. Went grocery shopping tonight, then watched TV, and the pain was much better.

It either works, or the resting helped (I've taken quite a few short naps in the past couple days) or it's mind over matter. I hope I feel this well tomorrow. I can still feel it, but it's not bad.

Diet has been fine. I have not turned to overeating, still counting calories and changing things around. I found the natural peanut butter and got some, and then also discovered PB2 which I've read about on the net for years--so I bought that, too! Cupboard has peanuts and almonds, but walnuts I left at the store--I never liked them, so will have to develop a taste for them.

I must say it's difficult adding fat back in. It's going to be a slow process for me, which is okay. Everything about this journey has been slow for me.

Have been extremely emotional the past couple days. Actually, to be blunt, I've cried a lot. Just overwhelmingly frustrated--I don't have a high tolerance for pain, I guess. Anyway, it's kind of funny--in the past I would have eaten. Can we say cookies, chocolate? I would have fed the frustration. Now? I'm actually *feeling* my emotions. It's not that I ever cried before, but I am really in the moment. I can't turn to food, I can't get my release from exercise, and the only thing left is to actually experience the feelings. I think that's actually a positive. Now I have to learn to deal with them in a better fashion. (Fighting with husband=not good.)

Life goes on, the sun will come up tomorrow, and I hopefully will be here. Pain or not, I will try to enjoy the day. I'm also going to try to get a workout in--but I'll take it easy.

Snow Day!

Schools are closed for the second day in a row. Normally we do our own thing (which usually means we have school on snow days), but today? Surprise, sweet son, Mom's giving you the day off. Translation: Mom wants a day off. Sweet son is oblivious, sound asleep in his bed. I turned his alarm off. tee he he

I'm dressed, ready for my morning workout, and have been for a good hour and a half. I took an Ibuprofen about two hours ago and am still waiting for it to dull this stupid pain. It is really ticking me off. I only took 400 mg, so I may take another 400. That's a lot of Ibuprofen, isn't it? I don't like taking that much, but 1 or 2 Motrin does nothing. This just dulls the pain, enough so that when it's bad, I don't double over. (I am using prescription Ibuprofen, fwiw. So it is doctor approved.)

Got up really early today, ate breakfast really early, and now I am starving. Holding off until I can workout and get an after-workout snack.

My doctor appointment isn't until the end of next week. I just want this whole mess to hurry up and be done with because if I have the surgery I will be out for exercising purposes for 6 to 8 weeks. That ticks me off. Patience, though, as it will improve my quality of life drastically.

Speaking of the pain, I have had it every single day since the 21st of January. It comes and goes and varies in intensity, but has reared its ugly head every single day. In a warped way, this is a good thing--because it makes my decision much easier on what to do.

Sorry to whine so much about the pain--and no need to comment about it. I'm just relating my journey, and that is a very big part of my journey right now.

If the weather is okay this afternoon, I hope to hit the grocery store. There will be a million people there (I hate shopping in the daytime!) but I want to spend some time looking stuff over. Will go to the real grocery store instead of Wally World, because the real store has more variety. It's just a lot more expensive. lol

That's it for now.

A Little Update

This weekend I bought myself some new DVDs. Ahem. As if I don't have enough. There's a term: vidiot. It's applied to those who love exercise videos and have a compulsion to buy them. (And use them!!!) I have turned into a vidiot.

I spent the weekend researching diet, nutrition, triglycerides, HDL, etc. I have also tried to *up* my fat intake--with healthy fats. This is proving extremely difficult for me. I was averaging 18-20% fat a day, with my lowest day coming in at 12%--eeek.

I'm also trying to up my protein. This is also difficult for me!

I am not going low carb, but I'm just trying to get things in better proportion.

The past year I think the focus was to count calories, "diet"--term used loosely, and exercise. I've got all that down really well. Love the exercise, hardly ever go over on my calories, and I am very aware of what I eat.

This coming year my focus is going to be on a healthier food intake. I want those triglycerides down and the HDL up. I want my insides to look fabulous. With that, the outside will look much better.

Thank you for all the recommendations for peanut butter/almond butter. I've made note and when I get to the store, I'll purchase. (DH, bless his heart, did our grocery shopping this weekend.)

Many times I have whined about my slow losses. Granted, I did lose 2 sizes without losing much on the scale, but still...I can't help but wonder if my too-low fat intake has something to do with that. That, and too low protein. I do try to eat a protein snack after workout out. I do try to eat protein with every meal, but I'm just not getting enough. I also wonder if this has affected the recent occurrence wherein a lot of my hair comes out when I comb it. Not a lot, but enough to pull it out of the comb to throw away. I haven't experienced that before. That could be with age, as our hair does thin--but I wonder.

I still have a lot of researching and implementing to do.

Always researching, thinking, figuring things out. It's a never ending thing--and that's okay, because health is worth it.

Peanut Butter Recommendations, Please

So I'm giving up my lunch meat. It's processed and not good anyway, even though I love it. I grabbed the jar of Jif, weighed out my half portion, 95 calories' worth, and had PB&J for lunch. It was good, nothing I ever crave--well, maybe once every few months. I'm just not a peanut butter person. BUT, it's good for me, so I'll do it. When I get really brave, I'll start eating it with only slice of bread--an open faced sandwich to drop my carbs down a bit. Not yet, though. lol

The thing is, though, I can't eat Jif. It has hydrogenated oil in it. That's a big no-no for everyone, but especially for my lipids. We do not have a health food store in town, so picking from say Wally World and HyVee, are there any good quality peanut butters out there without the hydrogenated stuff in them? I am clueless.

Will also eat more tuna, which will be easy to eat alone or on once slice of bread. Need to pick up almonds, too.

Researching changes to make--not fun, but necessary. Need more protein. Hate yogurt. Get sick of chicken breasts. Ugh. This is going to be a difficult task.
