This has been a productive week for my brain. It was nice getting stuff out of me because I think I let things fester. It was nice looking at the bright side, which I actually often do.
I started thinking, though, about where I am right now. I've been making some excuses for things I should and could be doing.
Excuses: I don't feel like it. I have cramps. I'm too tired. I have other things I need to do. I don't want to sweat because then I'd have to shower again and I need to go out. I'm tired. I said that one. I'm overwhelmed.
The result of me throwing excuses out is I get very little done. Seriously.
I don't feel like it. That one goes out often, especially when it is time to cook. Hubby cooks often, I cook sometimes. I hate cooking. Actually, it goes out for a lot of things. It's a diva mentality for sure.
Solution: Tough sh*t, do it anyway. I mean seriously, I need some tough love on that excuse. It's ridiculous.
I have cramps. Well, that excuse is real. I've been cramping all week, mild to moderate. No period, just cramps. I've not been taking much Ibuprofen due to my stomach, which has helped my stomach, but not the cramps.
Solution: Do my best to deal with it. Work through it. D&C and ablation is Friday, I hope and pray that will alleviate the pain.
I'm too tired, I'm tired. This is another tough one because I really am tired often. Poor sleep, lack of exercise=exhaustion.
Solution: Massive amounts of coffee/caffeine. NOT! That's not good for anxiety and health. Establish better bedtime routine, better wake-up routine. Perhaps set alarm clock. Ahem. Exercise. Use my generic hypnosis CD. Allow myself to nap if completely necessary with no guilt. Set timer for nap, so it's minutes not hours.
I don't want to sweat because then I'd have to shower again and I need to go out.
Solution: This one is tough. I am having a very difficult time working in this new-found exercise to my routine. When we were doing school, I liked doing it in the early afternoon. I wouldn't shower in the morning, just got dressed. Then I'd exercise, shower, do my hair, etc. I'm not a morning person, so exercising in the morning is out for me.
Face it, Jo, you don't go out much. (Yes, another problem is I'm a bit of a recluse, going out only for my son and shopping.) So get up, get dressed, exercise in the early afternoon, shower just like I did when school was going and I was actually exercising on a more regular basis.
Overwhelm.
Solution: Another tough one in which I struggle with. Sometimes everything is overwhelming to me. I think the best way for me to handle this is to make a loose schedule and stick to it. Like the old-fashioned vintage towels, Monday=laundry, Tuesday=baking, etc. I need to choose one of my bigger tasks per day and do it. Cleaning, laundry, bills, etc. My mom did this. She could have taught Martha Stewart some lessons. I remember Thursdays were cleaning days, and I had to vacuum for her. I hated Thursdays because I hated vacuuming. I always told her I would never vacuum my house on a Thursday. I didn't for many years. It worked, though.

I used to work. It's been 12 years since I worked outside the home, and it seems like a lifetime ago. My son was almost two when I "retired" and started my new career as a stay-at-home mom, domestic goddess, or domestic engineer. A few years later I added in home educator onto my resume.
Life was easier when I worked. Life revolved around work. Work hours were 8-5 every day, which meant I had to get to bed by 10, get up at 6. Most of the housework was done on weekends, as was shopping. Scheduling was a no-brainer, it was all worked out around the job.
When I quit and stayed home, I started staying up later because I could, started getting up later because I could. Any schedule was shot to hell. My son had a schedule, but I did not. Too much freedom is not good for me.

Before our Starbucks closed, I had decided I would spend $40 a month on coffee. I thought that if I set my alarm, got out of bed, showered, fixed myself up, and actually got out the door bright and early every morning, that I could set myself up for a good routine. I never did it, though. Then Starbucks closed when they closed over 600 stores. That might have worked really well for me, schedule wise and recluse wise.
Once every other week we used to do McDonald's and Arby's for breakfast. Egg McMuffin for me and biscuits and gravy for my son from Arby's. I won't do that anymore for either of us. Not healthy. (But yummy, I still crave Egg McMuffins with all their nasty fat!) It got us up an going, it was something to look forward to.
Getting up to take a morning walk is something I'm not interested in. The diva in me says, "There's nothing in it for me but exercise." lol I need to get out and around people more, which is why Starbucks and McDonald's was so appealing to me.
Thinking, thinking, thinking. I think I'll be looking for more solutions this weekend.
You certainly don't have to have anyone tell you how important getting the workouts in can be...You already know that stuff, and I completely understand what you're going through. But make yourself do it and you'll feel your attitude shift in not long. It gets so much easier and soon you will hate it when you have to miss one.

I've found that simple things can impact my schedule in positive ways. Packing a gym bag at night makes me 10x more likely to work out the next day. Packing a lunch the night before makes me much less likely to grab something unhealthy.
ReplyDeleteI've also come to the realization that exercise actually makes me less tired (in the long run). Now I don't sleep well unless I've gotten in my daily something.
You've done the easy part, Jo: you've identified the excuses. Now stomp those suckas out!
so.... i admit, some thing that has always made me go, oh i'm jealous when i read your blogs, is showering after working out. hehehehe! i'm so not a morning person. So when I get up, it's straight in the shower for me or I'm a zombie irate woman who is grumpier than all get out ALL DAY! just because of no wake up shower. I know, crazy. So when i get done working out, I have a 2 1/2 year old running around AND a sleeping hubby in the bedroom with said shower... i never get to shower afterwards. even if i leave the house... i just slather on more deoderant and change my clothes, and lets face it... hope i don't stink. Figure if I can't smell it... I must be ok. oh the horror!! hehehehe! you make me jealous, showers any time i want. I can't wait until she gets to your sons age. hehehehehehe!!
ReplyDeleteI love egg mcmuffins too and have heard tell that they're not such a bad breakfast choice. The hash browns, on the other hand... lol. I used to enjoy eating two egg mcmuffins with milk for "breakfast" after an all-nighter. Two might be too much.
ReplyDeleteI have had the same exercise/shower schedule as you most of my life - just don't shower until after I exercise in the afternoon - and sometimes I'd have the same issues with feeling like I HAD to shower only once a day, and it HAD to be after the exercise, and this would throw wrinkles. When I started doing yoga, one of my books on it told me to be clean and showered BEFORE I started the yoga. This surprised me but made sense upon thinking about it, and I was able to see what I already knew - that I was imprisoned by this shower issue. Why on earth would it be SO MUCH TROUBLE to shower in the morning, exercise WHENEVER, and either just dry off (the damage isn't so bad if I am already showered for the day) or rinse off in the shower after exercise (which takes about a minute or two).
I had to laugh about the shower thing too. I'm lucky to get one a day--either before the kids are up or after they go to bed. I still exercise--I guess I just stink the rest of the day. You always have the most thoughtful posts. I think you have got this thinking thing down! Love it!
ReplyDeleteBecause I don't work either, I've become less and less time efficient, to the extent where I'm not getting the important stuff done and wasting far too much time. I actually blogged about it this week... I have drawn up some guidelines as to how I should spend my time every day and hopefully I'll be more productive from now on. A certain measure of structure is important!
ReplyDeleteThe key to weight loss is the willingness to change. You can not change your weight without changing your likes, dislikes, the way you think about yourself, the way you do things, your habits, your preconceived ideas, your routine - in fact, every area of your life.
You've done very well in some areas, and I have no doubt that you will find solutions to your dilemmas. Remember, something's gotta give!
Sounds like you're answering your own questions and finding a plan for yourself. It takes time to find the right routine that works. I know it took me many months and then I had to change it because of weather and then yet again when my workout place closed. It's always a balancing act and there are always changes. You'll figure it out just keep telling yourself you're worth it.
ReplyDeleteIn Nursing School, we call this a CARE PLAN: "PIE" for PROBLEM, INTERVENTION, and EVALUATION.
ReplyDeleteIdentify the problem, DO SOMETHING to fix it (intervention) and evaluate what is working and what is not. Problems seldom fix themselves....until WE FIX THEM! Jo, YOU are doing great!
I know what you mean with the schedule. During the school year, I have to have a schedule. I'm much more lackadasical during the summer...
ReplyDeleteAnd I totally plan my day around my shower! I thought it was just me!
Excuses are hard to get around but I know you can do it chicky!! Good luck :)
Oh yes, it was so much easier when I worked - work created the schedule for me.
ReplyDeleteWe started school on the 1st & I still have a very loose schedule going. I really need to tighten it up but I'm so not a schedule type person.
Bummer that the walk isn't your thing. That is one thing we do about 3 mornings a week. We're out the door by around 8am & since it is fairly quiet around the neighborhood we see more animals than usual. It isn't a fast paced workout type walk, but it is still exerise & I hope that by doing, I'm teaching the kiddos that exercise doesn't have to be boring.
I have a lot of the same excuses - I like some of your solutions & need to apply them to myself as well.
Best of luck this week!
I use that shower excuse far too much! Actually I use alot of those. Though not this week! I exercised through my period. Not that it got me far...
ReplyDeleteI used to hate walking by myself too but I quite enjoy my walks now :D maybe you need to give it another try
