T-Bones

Yesterday my hubby thawed some t-bone steaks for supper. I had no idea how point unfriendly they were.

3 oz. = 5 points
4 oz. = 7 points
5 oz. = 9 points

I had 3 ounces. May I just say, 3 ounces of a t-bone steak is a few bites. It was tiny! Smaller than a deck of cards.

He had picked up some bakers at the store. The old way we used to eat: buy bakers, smother them with butter and sour cream. Bakers are what we call giant potatoes for baking. I weighed my potato and it came in at 14 ounces. That was 7 points without anything on it. I sliced it down and had a 4-point potato with some fat-free sour cream. Still huge, but more friendly.

We had a salad to round things out.

While the steak tasted heavenly, as did the potato, it was an unsatisfying meal. Even with the salad, which I am really enjoying now, I just felt unfulfilled, let down.

I love learning on this journey. Next time he pulls out t-bones, I think I'll get a chicken breast out for me. Much more meat for the points, much more filling.

We are whittling down the beef in our freezer. I need to go inventory it and plan meals accordingly. While I still love beef, I prefer the leaner, more point-friendly cuts where I feel full after eating. Not sick full, but satisfied.

I know we will never buy a side of beef again. While it has been wonderful having the meat in the freezer, so many were cuts we wouldn't ordinarily buy. I'm anxious to clean the freezer out and start picking and choosing and stocking up at the store.

No more t-bones for me! By choice! =)

  1. I had that "is it worth it" moment a while back with lasagne...the amount of food I got for the calories made me think long and hard about everything I choose to eat now - good to know that T-bones aren't worth it, either.

  2. Sorry your meal wasn't satisfying. Hopefully next time you'll enjoy your chicken more.

  3. I hate it when you don't enjoy something as much as you think you will. Pretty sucky. But its better to have something more point friendly and enjoy it than to suffer through it...

  4. The same thing happened to me; I bought a whole carton of eggs, but it turns out I didn't really want to eat a whole dozen eggs. Now I just buy them one at a time...

  5. Isn't it terrible to have such an unsatisfying meal? It is really eye opening to see how many calories are really in our food!

  6. I hate that about steak--I guess it is the fat content. How could something that tastes so good be so bad? You did a great job of enacting your new eating principles. I'm sorry you weren't satisfied. But think of how much you have learned and how far you have come. It's really impressive.

  7. Good for you for not just giving in and eating the whole piece of steak and potato! That's a victory in itself. You should be proud of yourself.

  8. Yes - very good - and forget about the steak when it's just not worth it!

  9. We enjoy steak on a semi-regular basis. Our favorite cut is the ribeye, but it's also higher in calories like the T-Bone...But, we've discovered lean sirloin steaks are calorie friendly. We usually enjoy 4 ounce servings for 180. It's small, but very tasty and the calories don't break the bank!

    My best always
and you're doing great by the way!!!
